Occupation: Editor and Founder of Action Magazine
Location: Gary, Indiana

The Savvy Sistah of the Week is Kenya Nalls and she’s the Editor and Founder of Action Magazine. I was so inspired just talking to Kenya, she’s a 20-something Sistah with a lot of drive & determination and she truly is a representative for Christ. After listening to the story of how Action Magazine came to be, I’m sure she will be able to reach her goal, to inspire our youth through media.

Kenya told me that in 2004  Action Magazine was initially going to be a Hip-Hop magazine and she would feature R&B and Rap artists. She was a college student at the time so she wanted to cater to other college aged students and provide them with information on this industry. She said that really wasn’t where her heart was at and for some reason the magazine was never released. Years later in 2007  the direction changed for Action Magazine when she moved back to Gary, Indiana (her hometown) after she graduated from college. The goal now was to create a magazine that would inspire young adults and create a avenue for them to “display their talents, gifts; and situations that would be a testament to the particular age group of 16-25“. Kenya said her mission statement now is to,” educate, entertain, inspire and uplift young adults. Here are a few questions I asked Kenya about Action Magazine…

Savvy : What inspired you to create Action Magazine and what caused you to change the direction from Hip-hop to Inspirational?

Kenya: I was tired of fighting God! When He told me to do the inspirational magazine, I battled with the thought because of how was living and I knew I was unworthy. After saying yes to God’s will, I began to see a need that young adults were crying out for, they wanted to see evidence of other young adults that they could identify with.

Savvy: How did working as a personal assistant for TV personality Monalisa Brown (Shy from Flavor of Love 3) prepare you for what you are doing now?

Kenya: I learned so much from working with Mona, I learned how to deal with people in the entertainment industry. That experience allowed me to display integrity in all that I say or do.

Savvy: Where do you see Action Magazine in 5 years?

Kenya: I see Action Magazine nationwide doing inspirational conferences for young adults. I also see Action Magazine as a non-profit organization to help young adults who desire a career in media and journalism.

Savvy: What are your words of encouragement for young women who want to start their own magazine?

Kenya: Never give up!!! Yes, it is hard and yes, you will go through, but if you just hold out to see what the end is going to be…it will all work out!

Kenya Nalls is taking “Action” by inspiring our youth with “Action Magazine” and that’s why she’s
