Remember week nights filled with Ed Gordon when he hosted BET News? Well, it appears nightly news on the Black entertainment channel will rise from the Phoenix with another reliable, articulate, handsome man with great news judgment.

According to The Maynard Institute’s Richard Prince, when T.J. Holmes walks out of the CNN building for the last time at the end of the year, he’ll enter the doors of BET where there are “plans to build a show around him.” This according to TV Newser who wrote that a BET source revealed the network has “had conversations” with Holmes.

You may remember BET welcoming Gordon home in an effort to bring news programming back. It was short lived when the powers that be nixed Gordon’s show and replaced it with Monique as a subpar late night talking head.

With the 2012 election year just around the corner, BET is once again entertaining the idea of building a news niche, and Holmes just may be the man to draw in an audience.

The Viacom-owned station will get a dress rehearsal. In light of Herman Cain’s withdrawal from the presidential race, BET announced earlier this week that it would air a news special, “The Curious Case of Citizen Cain” on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. It will focus on the conservative’s politics and the sex scandals that doomed his hopes of becoming Commander-in-Chief.

If the rumor mill proves to be true, do you think T.J. Holmes will have success at BET?
